Why Maisie Williams thought Arya Stark was queer until last season

It turns out the last season of game of Thrones confused Maisie Williamsto.

The actress, who played badass Arya Stark in all eight seasons of the epic HBO series, thought she understood her own character’s sexuality — until she didn’t.

“The first time I was surprised by Arya was probably on the last series where she strips naked and sleeps with Gendry,” Maisie said Teen Vogue. “I thought Arya was gay, you know? So yes. It was a surprise.”

In the scene Arya and Gendry [Joe Dempsie] are on the brink of certain death before the Battle of Winterfell, so she tells Gendry that she wants to know the feeling of physical intimacy if it is indeed their last night to live.

Despite the circumstances, it rubbed many fans – and now, of course, Maisie – the wrong way. Back then though game of Thrones co-creator David Benioff defended the decision.

“Some characters want to make love for the first time because they’ve never done it before.” said Benioff. “There are other characters who get drunk and sing songs, and then there are characters who are just trying to find some human comfort together.”
