A new documentary about the death of Will Young’s brother Rupert Young, which highlights the difficulties of addiction, is airing on Channel 4.
But what is the documentary about and when will it be on TV?
Here’s what you need to know.
What is the documentary about?
In the documentary, titled Will Young: Losing My Twin Rupert, the singer examines the stigma of addiction as well as the impact the disease has on families.
It also shows Will trying to cope with his grief after losing his 41-year-old brother to addiction and suicide in 2020.
The Channel 4 documentary’s introduction reads: “Singer Will Young lived with his twin’s alcoholism for over 20 years until Rupert’s death in 2020. Will’s shockingly honest and moving film explores the pain and drama of a loved one’s addiction.”
In a statement accompanying the documentary, Will Young said: “It has been very insightful and emotional making this film and I am very proud of everyone’s involvement in it.
“I hope it sheds light on the difficulties so many people in the UK face today when it comes to addiction and getting the help they need.”
Channel 4 Editor-in-Chief Rita Daniels said: “We are immensely grateful to Will and his family for opening up the sensitive and difficult issue of addiction and we hope Will’s profound tribute to his brother will be of great help to those affected by similar problems .”
Young has previously spoken out about his brother’s suicide and in a statement issued after the inquest into his brother’s death outside court, the singer said he believed his brother should have been evaluated by a psychiatrist.
He said: “I feel it had to, or should, have been obvious to everyone involved that he was at high risk of suicide and should have been jailed under the Mental Health Act for his own safety.
“If that had happened, he might still be alive today. I know we are not the only family in this situation and I pray that lessons will be learned from his situation and some of these deaths will be prevented in the future.”
When is the documentary coming out?
Will Young’s documentary will be released on Channel 4 on Tuesday 10th May at 10pm.
