Nagaenthran’s family confirmed his execution on Wednesday when speaking to the media. Nagaenthran’s sister spoke to the media and criticized Singapore’s actions. She went on to say that Malaysia is far better at protecting human rights, while Singapore scores zero on human rights.

Maya Foa, the director of the non-governmental organization Reprieve, also condemned this act of the Singaporean judiciary. She stated: “Hanging a mentally handicapped, mentally ill man for being forced to carry less than three tablespoons of diamorphine is unjustifiable and a flagrant violation of international law, which Singapore has joined.”

According to the reports, Nagaenthran had an IQ of 69 and was mentally handicapped, and the death penalty for a mentally handicapped person is inhumane and also prohibited under international human rights law.

Nagaenthran’s mother submitted an application on Monday. In her application, she argued against the ruling issued by the Singapore court, calling the ruling unconstitutional. She argued against the motion, stating that it was unlawful to hang a mentally handicapped person.

The Singapore court dismissed the application, calling it silly.

Nagaenthran’s family said his body would be returned to his hometown of Perak in northern Malaysia. His family has made all the arrangements for his funeral.

According to the reports, Nagaenthran’s execution had been planned and decided earlier, but due to COVID-19, his execution was halted.

Under the Singapore Constitution, anyone found with drugs over 15 grams faces the death penalty, but judges have the right to reduce that sentence to life imprisonment.
