Ncuti Gatwa is best known for his role as Eric Effiong on the Netflix sitcom Sex Education
Actor Ncuti Gatwa has been announced as the next Doctor Who, succeeding Jodie Whittaker and becoming the 14th Time Lord.
But who is Ncuti Gatwa, what else has he been in and when will he start his new role?
Here’s what you need to know.
Who is Ncuti Gatwa?
Rwandan-born Scottish actor Gatwa is best known for his role as Eric Effiong on the Netflix sitcom Sex Education.
The new Doctor was announced hours before this year’s Bafta Television Awards, where Gatwa will be nominated for Best Male Performance in a Comedy Program for the third straight year for his performance as Eric.
He has already won a Scottish Bafta and a Rose d’Or for the role.
What did he say about his new role?
Gatwa said he was “deeply honored, beyond excited and of course a little scared” to star in the popular sci-fi show. He will also be the first non-white cast member to play the lead.
He added: “This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled this unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.
“I will do my best to do the same.”
Showrunner Russell T. Davies said Gatwa “blinded” us at his audition. The Queer As Folk and It’s A Sin author is returning as the show’s showrunner after leaving the show in 2009.
The author added, “Sometimes a talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant that I just step back in awe and thank my lucky stars.”
Gatwa also said that the prospect of working with Davies was “a dream come true”.
“His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fraught with danger – an actor’s metaphorical playground. The whole team was so welcoming and really put their heart into the show,” he added.
“As scary as it is, I’m aware that I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart, but I’m giving everything to this show.”
Charlotte Moore, BBC Chief Content Officer, said: “Ncuti has incredible dynamism, he is a formidable and fearless young actor whose talent and energy make the world light up and set Doctor Who in the new era of Russell T Davies at an extraordinary level will take adventures with them.”
When will he be the next Doctor Who to launch?
Jodie Whittaker became the first female doctor to take over as doctor in 2017, but will step down in a special episode airing this fall.
Her finale will also feature appearances from two former assistants – Ace, played by Sophie Aldred, and Tegan, played by Janet Fielding.
Gatwa will then make his debut as a Time Lord in 2023.
