A group of so-called ‘tire extinguishers’ claim to have deflated the tires of 85 SUVs across Leeds overnight
Climate activists had the tires of dozens of SUVs deflated across Leeds
The tire extinguisher group took to the streets to deflate 85 SUV vehicles in the northern city to shed light on the climate crisis.
The group has released a statement to explain its actions against SUV owners after staging similar protests in London and Yorkshire.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Who is the tire extinguisher group?
The Trye Extinguishers is a climate activist group that has been mainstream on social media since July 2021.
The activists regularly post updates on their Twitter page to show their supporters the latest protests in areas across the country.
The protests include deflating the tires of SUVs and 4x4s.
What are the goals of tire extinguishers?
According to their website, The Tire Extinguishers’ primary goal is to “make it impossible to own a giant polluting 4×4 in the urban areas of the world.”
The group says SUVs and other similar vehicles are “climate disasters,” “cause air pollution,” are “dangerous,” and “unnecessary.”
They said: “We stand up against climate change, air pollution and unsafe drivers.
“We’re doing this with a simple tactic: deflating the tires of these huge, unnecessary vehicles, causing inconvenience to their owners.
“Repeatedly deflating tires and encouraging others to do the same will turn the small inconvenience of a flat tire into a huge impediment to driving massive killer vehicles on our roads.”
The group add that the UK government and politicians have “failed to protect us from these huge vehicles” and encourage others across the country to take the same action.
What happened at Leeds?
The tire extinguishing group said they were taking “emergency action” to drain tires on vehicles in the Meanwood area of Leeds and the rest of the city.
Vehicle owners were greeted by flat tires in the morning while activists deflated the tires overnight.
In a statement explaining the action, The Tire Extinguishers said: “We have acted on behalf of our family and friends, children at school and all the many people we will never meet who are already suffering and dying as a result of this inaction.
“The threat to all of our lives is dire and irreversible. Yet we have so many solutions at hand just waiting to be deployed for the benefit of all.
“However, SUVs – including electric SUVs – are simply not compatible with a future worth living in.
“We must all ask ourselves what we can do together at this time to bring about the changes needed to avoid the worst of the impact.”
The group says the tires were deflated using the valves without causing “no irreversible damage” to the tire itself.
According to the group, cars with a blue sticker or vehicles from dealers are not affected.
West Yorkshire Police are aware of the incident and a spokesman said: “Police are investigating today after reports that tires on a number of vehicles were abandoned overnight in the Meanwood area of Leeds.
“No physical damage was caused to the tires of the attacked 4×4 vehicles.
