What is a spare day?

If a public holiday falls on a weekend, the next available weekday that is not also a public holiday becomes the “substitute day”.

For example, last year Christmas and Boxing Day both had spare days as both dates fell on a weekend in December 2021.

So while Christmas is December 25 and Boxing Day is December 26, December 27 and 28, 2021 were substitute holidays instead.

Will there be an additional holiday in 2022?

It was announced last November that we would be enjoying an extra bank holiday in 2022 to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The Government said in a statement Britain would mark the Queen’s 70th anniversary as monarch with “a blockbuster weekend of celebrations”.

The Spring Bank Holiday will be moved to Thursday 2nd June and an additional holiday on Friday 3rd June will kick off a four day weekend to celebrate the Platinum Anniversary.

Then Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee will be a truly historic moment – and one that deserves a celebration to remember.

“We can all look forward to a special four day anniversary weekend, during which we will put on a spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime show, blending the best of British ceremonial splendor with the latest in art and technology.

“It will bring together the entire nation and the Commonwealth in a fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s reign.”
