Who will perform at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony?

Duran Duran will lead the opening ceremony in her hometown of Birmingham. Formed in Birmingham in 1978, Duran Duran was a chart leading figure in the 1980s and early 1990s with notable hits such as Hungry Like the Wolf, Ordinary Girls and Girls on Film.

Singer Simon Le Bon said: “The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham is a momentous moment for the great city of Birmingham and we at Duran Duran are honored to be a part of it in our hometown.”

Black Sabbath’s Tony Lommi and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) will perform on the same stage. A 1,000-strong choir and the arrival of the Queen’s Baton will also feature.

The Commonwealth Games ceremony will be produced by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight at an event that will showcase Birmingham, Sandwell, Wolverhampton, Sutton Coldfield and Cannock Chase to the world. Auditions for the opening ceremony began last summer with 1,700 people between the ages of 18 and 80 competing for a seat at the historic event.

Another 205 production assistants and 30 professional staff have made around 3,500 costumes in preparation for the ceremony since early 2022.

The Opening Ceremony will be the formal opening of the Commonwealth Games.

During the ceremony we see the raising of the flags, the parade of athletes and welcome speeches. There will be an artistic performance that will showcase the culture of the host country.

The opening ceremony also concludes the Queen’s baton and at the end of the ceremony the last runner passes the baton back to the Queen or her representative who reads a message to officially open the games.

The BBC will cover the entire competition including the opening ceremony, in total they will show over 200 hours of action in up to 11 live streams.

Who will present the Commonwealth Games?

Hazel Irvine, Care Balding, Gabby Logan, Jason Mohmmad, Holly Hamiliton and Ayo Akinwolere will report live on television daily from the Centenary Square studio in Birmingham.

Commonwealth gold medalists Max Whitlock and Beth Tweedle will join an expert panel of analysts, which will also include Olympic gold medalists Michael Johnson, Denise Lewis and Jess Ennis-Hill, who will cover athletics.
