One of the most respected physicians in the Intermountain West was surgical and radiation oncologist Dr. Leland Cowan.

While practicing radiation therapy for nearly four decades, Cowan helped found the Leland R. Cowan Cancer Clinic. On June 23, 2022, Cowan, a 94-year-old MD who has treated cancer patients for over 40 years, passed away.

general surgeon dr Leland Cowan practiced in Salt Lake City and had over 69 years of experience. He was born in 1928 and although the cause of death has not been given, it is believed to have been of natural causes.

Condolences and heartfelt prayers were poured out from Cowan’s family as words were not enough to express their sadness at his passing.

The Salt Lake City surgical oncologist started his business in 1965 with his father. The father-son combo worked together for ten years, during which time they gained a reputation as two of the finest doctors due to their demanding work schedules, rigorous patient follow-up, and unwavering commitment to their patients.

Leland’s father died of cancer in 1976, but Dr. Cowan helped found the Leland R. Cowan Cancer Clinic in memory of his late father. He worked there as a radiation therapist for almost 40 years before he died four days ago.

The Illness and Death of CBS Lee Cowan’s Father

As previously mentioned, the cause of death or mention of illness has not yet been released. The wise doctor found his way into the skies after just over 94 years of age as he always aspired to be a pilot.

Lee Cowan, the son of Leland Cowan, is a well-known journalist.

He was a news anchor and reporter for CBS and is an Emmy winner. Lee earned a dual degree in Voice Communications and Communications from the University of Washington in 1988.

The 57-year-old news reporter was married to Molly Palmer and grew up in Salt Lake City. Lee lost his mother, wife of Leland Cowan, in 2020 and the loss of his father has completely devastated his family.

In 1955, Cowan joined the US Air Force as a medical officer with the goal of one day becoming a pilot. He enthusiastically performed his duties at Tripler Army Medical Center on Oahu and then on Johnston Island, although that wasn’t his preferred area.

Constance June Walters, a licensed practical nurse employed at Lenox Hill Hospital, is the person he fell in love with while there. The couple were later married in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Dr. Cowan had just graduated from Columbia Medical School at the time.

Cowan is survived by two sons, Molly, a daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren, Kevin and Harrison. Leland’s funeral service will be held at 11 am on June 27 at St. Mark’s Cathedral.

It is requested that the donation be made to the American Cancer Society rather than bringing flowers as the family expects all of their loved ones to attend the funeral to offer prayers and condolences.
