Today, only about every fifth train is supposed to run on about half of the network. In some areas there are no trains all day.

Pickets were set up outside stations as members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) at Network Rail and 14 train operators went on strike.

Travel advice for train passengers

Passengers have been urged to travel by train only when they must and when it is necessary.

They have also been urged to allow more time for their journey and to check when their last train leaves.

Trains are also expected to be suspended on Thursday morning (July 28) and service will begin later when staff resume duty.
