Elle Fanning in The Great

The Great follows Catherine and Peter’s rocky marriage and their plan to succeed him as ruler of Russia.

The second season aired on Hulu in November 2021 before coming to StarPlay and is now finally airing on Channel 4.

What is “The Big One” about?

The series has been labeled anti-historical because it plays on the past in a fast and loose manner, but the characters and overall storyline are generally based on true events.

The Great follows Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, from her time as an outsider in Russian politics through her marriage to Peter III. up to their monumental rise to power.

The first season saw the development of Catherine’s plot against Peter III, Emperor of Russia, ending in a coup d’état in which she ousted him from power.

In season two, Catherine is now pregnant and her husband deposed from the throne, but still frustratingly alive.

Nicholas Hoult as Peter III in The Great

Peter, realizing a little too late that he must win back his wife’s affections and get her back on his side, plots while he is under house arrest.

As the separated couple continue to plot against each other while adjusting to parenthood, war with Turkey threatens to destabilize Catherine’s rule.
