Mutya Buena’s daughter Tahlia was born in March 2005, just seven months before the band released their fourth album, Taller in More Ways.
Mutya Buena has revealed she was “embarrassed” about suffering from depression after becoming a mother.
The 37-year-old singer from London explained how fame at being part of the ‘Sugababes’, who were one of Britain’s biggest girl groups in 2011, has impacted her mental health.
She told the BBC Sounds podcast ‘When I was 25’ that she struggled with her body image and recalled being called ‘crazy fat’ and ‘ugly’.
Mutya said she felt even worse when she became pregnant with her now 17-year-old daughter Tahlia-Maya Buena.
“I just didn’t feel good. Also, having the baby blues with the girls didn’t make me feel good. I felt like I had this baby bump. I felt insanely fat,” Mutya said.
“I didn’t feel like my normal self.”
Mutya believes that postpartum women need time to pull themselves together, but she didn’t get that.
Their daughter Tahlia was born in March 2005, just seven months before the band released their fourth album, Taller in More Ways. It peaked at number one and was certified double platinum in the UK.
She announced two months later that she was leaving the group for “personal reasons” and went on to reveal that she suffered from postnatal depression.
Postnatal depression is a common type of depression that some parents experience after having a baby.
Mutya admitted that dealing with motherhood and being a part of a hugely successful pop group while trying to hide her depression made her “really emotional”.
She said it was “taboo” back then because mental health wasn’t as publicly recognized as it is today.
Mutya said: “Suffering from depression was the hardest because then you have to own what you’re going through.
“For ages it felt embarrassing. You don’t tell people you’re depressed because then they look at you differently. Talking about it makes you look crazy.”
The singer revealed she would sit in the dark with the curtains closed all day before deciding she needed to make it better for her daughter and herself.
She added that she learned to pull herself out.
In June, original Sugababes members Siobhan Donaghy, Mutya Buena and Keish Buchanan announced that a 17-date tour would be held later that fall. It’s the band’s first tour in over two decades.
In 2021, they re-released their original debut album One Touch, with plans for new music.
Mutya Buena was born in Kingsbury, London and attended Kingsbury High School. She knew early on that she wanted to be a singer.
Her father was Filipino with part Hispanic ancestry and her mother was of English and Irish descent.
In 1998, she formed Sugababes with original members Siobhan Donaghy and Keisha Buchanan.
In 2000 they released their debut album One Touch. It peaked at number 26 in the UK Albums Chart, eventually earning a Gold certification.
Three songs from the album reached the top 20 and the song “Overload” was nominated for a BRIT Award for “Best British Single”. However, the group failed to live up to London Records’ expectations and were dropped.
Her next album in 2002, Angels with Dirty Faces, peaked at number two and was certified triple platinum.

Siobhan, 38, was a British singer-songwriter for the Sugababes and worked very closely with Mutya Buena when she was part of the band.
She was a founding member of the band but left in 2001 to release her debut solo album, Revolution In Me.
In 2012, the trio confirmed a reunion was happening, but were unable to release it under the same name due to legal issues with the management company.
It was seven years before they could finally legally own Sugababes.
The 37-year-old was a British singer and a founding member of Sugababes alongside Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy.
In 2009, Buchanan left the group, but not willingly. Former founding members of Sugababes were believed to have forced them to leave after rumors of catfights and backstage disagreements surfaced.
It was later revealed that the two were not involved in Keisha’s removal, sparking rumors that management was responsible for the change.
She was replaced by former Eurovision contestant Jade Ewen.
Keisha returned for the band’s reunion in 2012.
British actor Jay Barrymore and Mutya were a couple in 2003 and 2005.
He is best known for his role in Have Your Cake and Eat It (1997).
Not much is known about Jay Barrymore and Mutya Buena’s relationship other than that the two had a daughter, Tahlia, who was born on March 23, 2005.
