A restraining order has been issued against Ricky Martin over allegations of domestic violence.

The person who filed the order is reportedly a member of the Puerto Rican superstar’s own family.

The order was filed earlier this month under Puerto Rico’s Domestic Violence Act, though police spokesman Axel Valencia was previously unable to provide further details, including who filed the order.

According to Spanish media outlet Marca, Martin physically and psychologically assaulted the victim for seven months.

Some outlets have reported that the affected family member is Martin’s nephew.

In Puerto Rico, crimes related to incest are punishable by up to 50 years in prison.

How did Ricky Martin react?

“Unfortunately, the person who made this allegation is struggling with severe mental health issues,” Martin’s attorney, Marty Singer, told US outlet Deadline.

“Ricky Martin, of course, was never – and never would be – involved in any kind of sexual or romantic relationship with his nephew.

“The idea is not only untrue, it’s disgusting.”

Singer added: “We all hope this man gets the help he so desperately needs.

“But most of all, we look forward to seeing this horrific case dismissed once a judge sees the facts.”

In response to the original order, Martin wrote in a statement: “The protection order issued against me is based on entirely false allegations, therefore I will respond at the trial with the facts and dignity that characterize me.

“Because this is an ongoing legal matter, I am unable to give any detailed statements at this time.

“I am grateful for the countless expressions of solidarity and accept them with all my heart.”

Who is Ricky Martin?

The singer was born Enrique Martín Morales, but professionally traces his roots to Ricky Martin.

He is considered the “King of Latin Pop”.

His career began with his 1991 self-titled album.

Martin’s first international hit came in 1995 with Maria.

With his first English-language album – also self-titled – he landed in 1999 at number one in the US charts.

It contained the hit single Livin’ la Vida Loca, which topped the charts in America and England.

He has won two Grammys during his career – in 1998 for Best Latin Pop Performance and in 2006 for Best Latin Pop Album for A Quien Quiera Escuchar (Deluxe Edition).

Martin has also won four Latin Grammy Awards over the course of his career, most recently in 2020 for Best Pop Vocal Album for Break

Outside of music, he is involved in philanthropy and activism.
