The announcement came days after it was confirmed that The 1975 would replace Rage Against the Machine, who had retired from headlining the festival due to illness
Rapper Jack Harlow and rock band Måneskin have both dropped from the Reading & Leeds Festival 2022 line-up.
Festival organizers have had to scramble to organize replacements after the international acts made the decision not to appear.
Fans were disappointed and some bought tickets to see the two acts perform on the Reading & Leeds stages.
But why did they withdraw from the performance and who could replace them in the line-up?
Here’s everything you need to know.
Why have Jack Harlow and Måneskin pulled out of their Reading & Leeds 2022 appearance?
On August 15, it was announced that they would no longer be performing at the festival.
Eurovision 2021 winners Måneskin had previously updated fans on their social media pages to let them know they would no longer be performing due to “unforeseen scheduling conflicts”.
Reading & Leeds organizers have confirmed that Måneskin and Jack Harlow will both be performing at an awards ceremony rather than performing for fans in England.
In a statement, the festival said: “We are saddened to hear that Jack Harlow and Maneskin have decided to perform at an awards ceremony the same weekend they were confirmed to be playing at Reading & Leeds.”
The awards ceremony is the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), which take place on the same weekend as the festival.
This was confirmed after the VMAs told followers on social media that they would both be performing at the show with K-pop band BLACKPINK and chart-topping Lizzo.
The VMAs will be held in Newark, New Jersey, meaning none of the acts will be in country to attend the 2022 Reading & Leeds Festival.
What did fans say about the cancellations?
Some fans were bitterly disappointed when Jack Harlow and Måneskin stopped performing to appear at the VMAs instead.
They have praised the organizers for “calling out” the acts for not fulfilling their scheduled performances.
One fan wrote on Twitter: “So glad they called her cause this is a joke.”
Another said: “I think that really underscores who’s making music for the right reasons and who’s doing it for money. Yes, you get paid for parties too, but you can connect with 100,000 other people while doing so. Awards are flat, decorative achievements by comparison.
Who could replace Måneskin and Jack Harlow at Reading & Leeds 2022?
Rage Against The Machine, who were set to headline the festival, pulled out last week after lead singer Zack de la Rocha sustained a leg injury on stage in Chicago last month and has performed in recent shows sitting in a chair.
While the band were forced to pull out of the festival and cancel their other UK touring shows due to recovery time from the injury, Reading & Leeds quickly organized a replacement.
The 1975 will instead appear on Sunday’s Headlines slot.
So far, however, no additions have been made to the bill following Jack Harlow and Maneskin’s cancellations.
Fans have made their own recommendations for replacements, with many preferring like-for-like action.
Rappers Playboi Carti and Central Cee have been circulated as suggestions for Jack Harlow, while British rock band Royal Blood have been suggested as replacements for Italian rockers Måneskin.
Other suggestions include AJ Tracey, Aitch, Kasabian, The Courteneers and Geordie singer-songwriter Sam Fender.
Who is playing at Reading & Leeds Festival 2022?
Despite the failures and cancellations, fans are offered a weekend full of music.
British rapper Dave, legendary rock band Arctic Monkeys and now The 1975 will headline the festival.
Bring Me The Horizon, Megan Thee Stallion and Halsey will also perform, and they will be joined by acts including Wolf Alice, Glass Animals, Little Simz, Run The Jewels and Fontaines DC
When does Reading & Leeds 2022 take place?
The festival takes place on the bank holiday weekend at the end of August.
Reading & Leeds takes place from 26th to 28th August.
The way the festival works sees acts performing in Reading and then Leeds on alternate days.
