Five million people have delayed extending their passports during the pandemic and the passport office is now facing unprecedented demand since Covid restrictions were lifted.

The EU’s post-Brexit travel rules are also adding to the pressure, as British citizens must have at least three months’ validity on their passports when traveling to EU member states.

MPs have criticized the passport office for repeatedly missing a 10-week target for processing applications, but Home Secretary Kevin Foster said the government has no intention of allowing that processing time to be further reduced.

His comments came as the Commons heard from a woman who has been waiting more than five months to receive her daughter’s new passport, with services branded as “either really very good or an absolute shambles”.

The Prime Minister is said to be “appalled” at the backlog in processing passport applications and will invite the agency’s leadership to urgent talks at No 10 on Thursday (28 April).

How do I get a Fast Track Pass Renewal?

It is possible to expedite your passport application if you are concerned that the non-urgent service will take too long.

You need to make an appointment at the passport office and pay online. Appointments can be made up to three weeks in advance.

You are eligible to request the Fast Track service if you:

  • need to renew or replace a passport or apply for a passport for the first child

If you have already applied for a passport and haven’t received it yet, don’t pay for an urgent passport because you won’t receive it sooner or get a refund.

There are two ways to apply for an urgent passport and you need to make an appointment with you nearest passport office as part of the application.

If you use the Online Premium Serviceyou will receive your new passport at your appointment, which lasts up to 30 minutes.

This option costs £177 (or £187 for a 50-page frequent traveler pass) and can only be used to renew an adult pass issued after 31 December 2001.

1 week fast track

This service can be used to renew an adult or child passport, change a name on a passport, make changes to personal information, replace a lost, stolen or damaged passport, or apply for a child’s first passport.

This service costs £142 for an adult pass (or £152 for a 50-page frequent traveler pass) or £122 for a child pass (or £132 for a 50-page frequent traveler pass).

  • You cannot use a computer, smartphone or the internet
  • You don’t have a debit or credit card
