The final episode of the dark crime drama Ozark aired last month and fans had to say goodbye to the Byrd family
Ozark follows Marty, a financial adviser who reluctantly moved his family from Chicago to the Missouri Ozarks to launder half a billion dollars of dirty money for an irritable drug lord.
When the series first debuted on Netflix in 2017, it was seen as the poor man’s Breaking Bad, it came into its own and garnered a huge following.
When Part 1 of Season 4 released in January, it became the most popular original series on the platform that week, racking up more than 4 billion views.
But now that the show is wrapped and there are no plans for a fifth season, it will leave a deep void in Netflix’s arsenal of new content.
There’s clearly an appetite for more Ozark stories, and further exploration of the universe could prove to be a goldmine for struggling Netflix.
Will there be an Ozark spinoff, who could star in it and what did showrunner Chris Mundy say?
Here’s everything you need to know
Will there be an Ozark spinoff?
An Ozark spinoff hasn’t been confirmed by the streaming giant yet, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t happen.
Netflix has been busy canceling shows of late, with Meghan Markle’s Pearl a high-profile casualty as the platform struggles to contain its financial woes.
However, the most popular Netflix shows – Stranger Things, The Witcher and Squid Game – all have a secure future.
With the success of Ozark behind it, a new show set in the same universe could be a very safe bet, especially considering Netflix’s success with Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul.
What did Chris Mundy say?
Referring to an Ozark spinoff, Mundy told TVLine, “It’s definitely something that people have been talking about a lot. There is nothing definitive.
“We’re lucky that people seem to really like the show, so obviously there’s going to be some interest.”
What could the spin-off be about?
*Spoilers ahead for Ozark Season 4*
The dramatic events of the season 4 finale offer a glimpse into who could star in a spinoff series and who got dropped.
An obvious candidate to headline an Ozark Universe show would have been Ruth, but due to her death in the finale, she will likely be ill.
However, Ruth cannot be completely ruled out as a prequel series could bring her back and look at her life before the Byrde’s came on the scene.
Wendy and Martin Byrde are left alive at the end of Ozark, but their story feels complete, and the new show wouldn’t be a spin-off if it focused on the same main characters, so it’s doubtful they’ll be in a leading role role would return.
Mundy added that any show connected to Ozark must be “their own distinctive thing.”
Other avenues that could be explored in a shared universe show include Omar Navarro’s drug cartel in Mexico, which was an integral but less visible presence.
Shaw Medical Solutions, Clare Shaw’s pharmaceutical company that works with the Byrdes, also deserves a more central storyline.
