Oxford Street was reportedly the scene of rioting and looting after gangs of youths stole goods from shops and caused riots in central London.

On Friday (August 12), the busy street known for its wide range of flagship retail outlets that draw tourists from far and wide became the scene of civil unrest.

Met Police confirmed a number of people had been arrested in connection with the incident in which officers were assaulted and luxury sports cars “jumped over”.

Videos shared online appeared to show the youths causing chaos in the streets; At one point, a group walks out of an American candy store with an armful of stolen candy.

In another moment, the gang jump onto the back of a Ferrari sports car trying to move down the street. It is unclear whether damage was caused to the vehicle.

The videos were shared widely on social media, including TikTok, and were met with shock and surprise from Londoners.

“WTF happened?” said a user on Twitter. “What am I hearing about connections in central London? All this about Oxford Street, Ferraris, people stealing from them [American] candy stores and police cars.”

It is estimated that around 100 youths were involved in the disorder.

How did the police react?

Police vans were at the scene and a helicopter was seen overhead as officers attempted to quell civil disobedience.

It is not known why the disorder started and whether it was pre-planned or spontaneous.

A Met Police spokesman said: “Police were called to Oxford Circus W1 at 5:53 p.m. to a group of youths who were gathering worried about a fight.

“The officials have responded. It is reported that several groups of youths broke into a number of shops and stole various items. Several arrests were made for theft and assault on the police.

“Police continue to work to disperse them. There is a Disposition Order under Section 60 and Section 35. The National Police Air Service provided assistance.”
