Dozens of visitors San Diego Zoo Safari Park witnessed a potentially frightening incident last week after a dog broke loose at the gorilla exhibit!
The dog, which appeared to be some sort of herding mix, was filmed by terrified parkgoers on Sunday running through the gorilla enclosure. Understandably shocked at the intrusion into their home, at least two of the large primates chased down the path in front of zoo guests.

Animal keepers were able to quickly remove the dog from the enclosure. And thankfully, neither the dog nor any of the gorillas appear to have been injured or otherwise affected. So that’s definitely good!
But as you can see (below), the brief incident made for some very tense times for parkgoers who watched it:
Corresponding CBS 8 San Diego, there were reportedly TWO different dogs being let loose in the park when the incident occurred. Only one came into the gorilla enclosure. It’s unclear how man’s best friend got into the zoo in the first place, but both were captured by zookeepers and taken to a shelter.

And we are VERY relieved to announce that this story has a happy ending! That San Diego Humane Society took control of both dogs and they have been taking care of them ever since. In fact, the animal organization decided to give a name to the dog that entered the gorilla enclosure The mighty Joe Young, after the movie. Ha!!
As you can see in this follow-up message from Monday (below), Mighty Joe Young is doing fine under the watchful eye of San Diego’s animal rights activists as they work to get him adopted by a family:
Awww! What a puppeteer!
So happy that everything turned out well!
