After announcing that Season 2 is on the way, Netflix has announced that it will be bringing Squid Game to the real world with a new reality TV show
Netflix hit series Squid Game took the world by storm last year and became the number one platform of all time. Within 28 days of its release, 1.65 billion hours were streamed.
Now, hot on the heels of green light a second season of the seriesNetflix has announced that it is bringing the show to life Squid Game: The Challenge – that’s all you need to know.
What is Squid Game: The Challenge?
At the Banff World Media Festival on Tuesday (June 14), Netflix announced a new reality TV show based on the hit series Squid Game would make his way to the platform.
Thankfully, this real-world version isn’t a matter of life or death for the contestants, but the show will remain similar to the original show in many ways – namely 456 contestants competing in a series of games to win a huge cash prize.
The show will consist of 10 episodes and comes after social media star Mr Beast did his own unofficial Squid Game Competition on YouTube in November, which has since racked up more than 250 million views.
Mr. Beast’s video was praised by Squid Game Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who said he “loved” it, while Netflix hasn’t commented.
The Competition is a co-production between Studio Lambert (The Circle) and The Garden (24 Hours in A&E), part of ITV Studios, and is filmed in the UK.
How high is the price?
The cash prize is up for grabs at the end Squid Game: The Challenge is expected to be the biggest in TV history – a whopping $4.56 million, which is roughly £3,771,120.
Brandon Riegg, Netflix Vice President of Unscripted and Documentary Series, said: “Squid Game took the world by storm [Hwang Dong-hyuk’s] captivating story and iconic images.
“We are grateful for his support as we bring the fictional world to reality in this massive competition and social experiment.
“Fans of the drama series can expect an intriguing and unpredictable journey as our 456 real-world contestants navigate the greatest competitive series ever, packed with suspense and twists, with the biggest cash prize ever at the end.”
It’s unclear how the prize will be distributed among the contestants – will there be one winner like the original show, or will it be split between a certain number of surviving finalists?
