Mystery of man who died on M1 in 2019 as police still unable to ID him

Mystery continues to surround the identity of a man killed on the M1 nearly three years ago.

The man died after being involved in an accident while attempting to cross the motorway in Northamptonshire in November 2019.

Police have launched a new call to try and find someone who can identify the man.

What happened to the man?

The man was killed crossing the M1 in Northamptonshire on November 29, 2019.

In a statement, police said: “A man was hit by several vehicles while attempting to cross the northbound highway at exit 18.

“Unfortunately, he died at the scene.

“It is suspected that he entered the country illegally, got off a lorry and, for unknown reasons, crossed the southbound M1, successfully making it through all three lanes before ending up in an attempt to then… crossing northbound.”

Although the accident happened almost three years ago, it has not yet been identified.

What is known about the man?

The man is described as in his late teens/early 20s, approximately 5ft 1in tall, with black hair and brown eyes.

He had a thin growth of facial hair and what appeared to be an old piercing in his left earlobe.

He also had two faint linear scars, about 1.5 cm and 3 cm long, on the back of his left forearm.

At the time of his death, he was wearing a black long-sleeved shirt that read “The Urban Club, Bronx,” a black and gray sweater, and black jeans.

He also had a European plug-in charger with him, a few euros and a Samsung mobile phone with an Orange France SIM card.

The Northamptonshire Police statement continued: “Shortly after his death in 2020, an expert from Liverpool John Moores University created an e-fit to show what the man would have looked like in the hope that someone would be able to provide information on his identity will submit .

“The Force is spreading this image again in hopes that someone who knows him will get in touch.”

Has an inquest been conducted into his death?

Since the man’s death in November 2019, police have “followed a number of investigative lines” to identify him.

His DNA and fingerprints have been shared internationally, but police have yet to locate his family or anyone who knows him.

Although his identity is unknown, the man’s inquest took place in Northampton last week (3 August) with the coroner determining the cause of death as an ‘accident’.
