Mickey Gilley was best known as the pioneer of the “Urban Cowboy” style. The Natchez, Mississippi native died peacefully surrounded by his family and close friends, according to a statement from Farnum. Gilley had reportedly recently returned home from the streets after playing 10 shows in April. His death has affected many of his fans and well-wishers. After learning of Mickey’s death, singer Johnny Lee said his heart will forever break at the loss of his dear friend Mickey Gilley. Lee added that Mickey believed in him when no one else did, saying that losing Gilley feels like a bad dream, and sadly, it’s not.

Who was Mickey Gilley?

Mickey Gilley was born on March 9, 1936 in Mississippi, USA and was a singer and songwriter. In the 1970s, Mickey began singing straight forward country and western material in the 1970s. Later, in the 1980s, he gravitated towards a more pop-friendly sound that would eventually bring him further success on the country charts and pop charts as well. Mickey had nearly 17 number one country records beginning with “Room Full of Roses” in 1974.

Mickey’s music career took on new life with the film Urban Cowboy. The film, starring John Travolta, was set at Gilley’s own honky tonk club in Pasadena, Texas. For those unfamiliar, the film helped popularize country western culture in urban settings, including mechanical bull riding. Gilley was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984.

The American country singer is survived by his wife Cindy Loeb Gillet and children Kathy, Gregory, Keith Ray and Michael, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Country singer T.
