Lewis Hamilton has apologized for a “stupid” post mocking his nephew for wearing a princess dress in 2017.

The Formula 1 driver can be seen in the September 2022 issue of vanity fair and told the magazine it was an “ignorant moment.”

Hamilton shared a video of his nephew with an embarrassed monkey emoji and the caption, “I’m so sad right now — look at my nephew,” on Christmas Day 2017.

In the now-deleted video, the seven-time world champion asked his nephew, “Why are you wearing a princess dress? Did you get this for Christmas? Why did you ask for a princess dress for Christmas?”

Hamilton then shouted, “Boys don’t wear princess dresses!” to his nephew, who covered his ears and turned away.

Following backlash from the video, Hamilton took down the post and apologized to his supporters for his “unacceptable” behavior.

When the original video was posted to Instagram in 2017, Hamilton received backlash from the post.

He accepted Twitter saying at the time: “I was playing around with my nephew yesterday and realized my words were inappropriate so I removed the post.

“I didn’t want to hurt anyone or offend anyone. I love that my nephew feels free to express himself the way we all should.

“I deeply apologize for my behavior as I realize that marginalizing or stereotyping someone is not really acceptable for anyone, no matter where you are from.

“I have always supported anyone who lives their life exactly how they want it to be and I hope that misjudgment can be forgiven.”
