Covid cases have tripled across Europe in the past six weeks, accounting for nearly half of global infections, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

The WHO said the 53 countries in its European region, which stretches into Central Asia, reported nearly three million new coronavirus infections last week and that the virus is killing about 3,000 people every week.

Hospitalization rates across Europe have also doubled, although ICU admissions remain low and the WHO warns repeated infections could potentially lead to a long Covid.

Globally, Covid cases have increased over the past five weeks, even as countries have scaled back testing.

WHO Europe Director Dr. Hans Kluge, described the virus as a “nasty and potentially deadly disease” that people shouldn’t underestimate, and warned hospital admissions will continue to rise in the autumn and winter months.
