Police found no sign of a struggle in the apartment, and the patricide initially appeared to be the result of an outburst of psychopathic violence.

However, as the evidence in the case mounted, it became clear that the killer had an understandable motive.

Born in Louisiana, USA, Anthony Templet was raised by his father from the age of five after being taken away from his mother and the rest of his family.

When Anthony was 17, he killed his father and shot him three times.

The incident happened in June 2019 and reportedly followed an argument between Anthony and his father.

Anthony shot and killed his father, Burt Templet, before calling the police and telling the operator: “I just killed my father. I shot him three times.”

After the shooting, information came to light about the abuse Anthony had suffered at the hands of his father.

Anthony had been the victim of physical abuse at the hands of his father for more than a decade, and he told interviewers he was often beaten for hours.

Burt was also very controlling, tracking Anthony’s movements, installing cameras around the house and banning him from attending school.

Burt attacked his wife Susan in March 2019 and threatened to kill her, prompting her to leave his home and report the attack to police.

Susan also said that she taught Anthony to read because he wasn’t allowed to go to school.

After the murder, Anthony was arrested for manslaughter, but the charge was later changed to second-degree murder, which carried a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Louisiana has the death penalty, but only for cases of first-degree murder, first-degree rape, or treason.

Several of Anthony’s family members and his stepmother, Susan, called for a light sentence for him.

Due to the extraordinary circumstances of Anthony’s case – the years of abuse he had endured and his lack of education – he was offered a plea deal.

Anthony did not plead involuntary manslaughter and avoided jail time – instead he was ordered to attend therapy sessions and get his high school diploma.

Since then, Templet himself has appeared in the Netflix documentary, offering his account of the tragic events.

He is now reconnecting with his mother and grandmother, with whom he had no contact for years after his father took him from them.
