Why did Superdry dump Brooklyn Beckham?

There is no doubt that 23-year-old Brooklyn is a high-profile influencer for brands, with Superdry taking notice of his 14 million Instagram followers.

He was announced as a brand ambassador for the Japanese company in November 2021, a role that included promoting Superdry products on its social media channels.

Brooklyn, who recently married actress Nicola Peltz, began promoting Superdry’s new vegan footwear collection in January 2022, using the brand’s slogan “Less your fashion footprint” in an Instagram post.

However, his followers and fans of the fashion retailer soon claimed hypocrisy after pointing out that Brooklyn was a carnivorous chef.

David and Victoria Beckham’s eldest son had started a career in the food industry after starting his Cooking with Brooklyn YouTube channel early 2022.

Likewise, his support and the lucrative payday he received from Superdry drew criticism, with some claiming it was the result of nepotism due to his famous parents.

However, Superdry has not given a specific reason as to why the deal between the two has ended.

A spokesperson for the brand said: “Superdry works with a number of brand ambassadors and has enjoyed working with Brooklyn during the opening of our new flagship store on Oxford Street and throughout our Autumn/Winter 21 campaign.

“We’re always reviewing the ambassadors who appear in our campaigns and have decided to work with a different spectrum of talent for Spring/Summer ’22.”

He attended Parsons School of Design in New York City to study photography for a semester after photographing a campaign for fashion house Burberry in 2016 at the age of 16.

He has since worked as an intern with British photographer Rankin and published a photo book entitled What I seein 2017.

The book itself was panned by critics, however Random House defended the book, saying it appealed to Brooklyn’s youthful fan base at the time.

By 2021, Brooklyn had ventured into other pastures, attempting to make a name for itself as a celebrity chef.

He started his Cooking with Brooklyn series, but this also drew criticism after it was revealed that each episode cost around $100,000 to make and a team of 62 professionals worked on the production.

Brooklyn has also appeared in videos for publishers such as Vogue alongside his wife, Nicola Peltz, where he presents recipes.
