“Before my 24th birthday I had three miscarriages. It seemed cruelly ironic that I was able to conceive easily but struggled to sustain a pregnancy. One of my miscarriages required a “follow-up,” a gentle way of saying I would need an abortion because my body would not be able to complete the pregnancy on its own and I would risk going into sepsis without medical intervention. I cried during this procedure. I was afraid for myself and I was helpless. I really wanted to end the pregnancy that was threatening my life.”

“I have given detailed instructions regarding the donation of my organs should I die or be declared brain dead, meaning if my heart kept beating but my brain didn’t work, the state would have permission to go into my warm and still red flesh to cut and take my organs to save other lives.”

Halsey then noted the irony of the situation and said:

“How weird that while my own heart would be nothing more than a series of involuntary movements on an operating table, a heart beating in my stomach could mean I couldn’t agree to saving my own life. That’s what some people who want abortion rights to end think so.”

But Halsey’s experiences haven’t changed her attitude toward abortion rights. In fact, giving people the right to choose has only helped them more:

“Many people have asked me if I’ve reconsidered my stance on abortion after having a child after years of fighting. The answer is clearly no. In fact, I’ve never felt so strong afterwards. My abortion saved my life and made way for my son. Every person deserves the right to choose when, if and how to have this dangerous and life-changing experience. I will hold my son in one arm and fight with the other with all my strength.”

Finally, we cannot stress this enough, it is a person’s right to choose whether or not they want an abortion. You can ch-ch-check her entire open letter HERE.
