James Caan was an American actor who rose to fame in the 1970s.

The actor was a multi-nominated performer who had garnered an Oscar nomination, an Emmy nomination, and four Golden Globe nominations.

Considered one of the most prolific actors of his generation, he leaves behind a rich film legacy.

What films has James Caan starred in?

James Caan’s first notable role was in 1972’s The Godfather, in which he portrayed Sonny Corleone, the eldest son of Mafia don Vito Corelone.

He received his Oscar nomination for this role and reprized it in The Godfather Part II.

Caan followed with appearances in films such as A Bridge Too Far and Thief.

The actor is best known for his role in the 1990 adaptation of the Stephen King novel Misery, in which he starred opposite Kathy Bates.

Caan continued working in the 2000s, with roles in 2003’s Dogville and the popular children’s Christmas film Elf.

How did James Caan die?

So far, the cause of death has not been confirmed.

His family shared the news of his sad death on social media, tweeting a statement from his official Twitter account.

The statement read: “It is with great sadness that we inform you that Jimmy passed away on the evening of July 6th.

“The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy at this difficult time.”

Was James Caan married?

During his life, Caan was married four times.

He married his first wife Dee Jay Mathis in 1961 before the couple separated in 1966.

Caan’s second marriage to Sheila Marie Ryan, an ex of singer Elvis Presley, lasted a year after they wed in 1976.

The actor married his third wife Ingrid Hajek in 1990. The couple had been married for almost four years when they split in 1994.

Caan was last married to Linda Strokes in 1995. They divorced in 2017 after 22 years together, citing irreconcilable differences.

He is survived by five children, including actor Scott Caan, who appeared on the CBS reboot of Hawaii Five-0 from 2010 to 2020.

Tributes poured in for the actor from across Hollywood after the industry learned of his passing.

Misery director Rob Reiner said he “loved working with him,” while comedy actor Adam Sandler said, “Loved him very much. Always wanted to be like him. So happy I met him.

“I never stopped laughing when I was with this man. His films advertise the best. We will all miss him terribly.”

Caan starred alongside Sandler in 1996’s Bulletproof and 2012’s That’s My Boy.

Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn said: “Rest in peace James Caan. There are so many of his films that I love, The Godfather films top the list of course, but here are a few more that I adore (in particular, Thief was a Gunn family classic – I had the poster on my wall in the High School) .”
