Ellen White is one goal away from equaling Wayne Rooney’s record for England.
One player who has been instrumental in England’s success in recent years is Manchester City’s Ellen White.
White has been a goalscorer for England in recent years and although she has not scored since England’s 8-0 win over Norway she has provided a strong force at the head of England’s attack and assisted fellow goalscorer Beth Mead , Georgia Stanway and Alessia Russo.
Who is Ellen White?
Born in Aylesbury in 1989, Ellen White initially played football for her local team before being spotted by Arsenal scouts at the age of eight.
Her school, The Grange School, Aylesbury, did not have a girls’ football team, meaning White spent much of her early years playing with the boys.
White was part of Arsenal’s youth squad from 1997 to 2005, eventually joining Chelsea at the age of 16. She became the Blues’ top scorer for three seasons, scoring 21 club goals in 48 games between 2005 and 2008.
From Chelsea she moved to Leeds Carnegie, back to Arsenal before moving on to Notts County, Birmingham City and finally Manchester City.
She has been with City since 2019 and during her time at the club she became just the second player in Women’s Super League history to score 50 goals after scoring a brace in her side’s 8-1 win over Bristol City.
In February 2021, White became the all-time all-time scorer in WSL with 55 goals, surpassing only Vivianne Miedemas’ 54, and later that year signed a two-year contract extension that will see her at City through at least 2023.
The international career of Ellen White
White has been on England’s radar since she was young when she played at U-17, 19, 20 and 23 levels.
She made her senior debut in March 2010 in a home game against Austria, scoring in the last minute in England’s 3-0 win.
She was then included in England’s squad for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 and scored a ‘miracle goal’ in the 2-0 win over Japan.
The striker received a personal award for her form that year and was subsequently voted England Player of the Year.
She has since played in England’s SheBelieves Cup campaigns and subsequent World Cup and UEFA Women’s Championship squads, in which she has scored 52 goals for her country.
White is the current female record-holder for most international goals for England, just one shy of Wayne Rooney’s all-time record for England.
Is Ellen White Married?
White is married to Callum Convery, who regularly attends her games. The two reportedly met at Loughborough College and got engaged in 2013 before wedding a year later.
Convery worked as a sports development officer for the Nottinghamshire Football Association but changed careers since White signed for Manchester City.
When is Ellen White next playing?
White is sure to be at the upcoming England Grand Final on Sunday 31 July 2022. All eyes will be on the forward to see if she can finally match Wayne Rooney’s goalscoring record.
