To say the characters of Peacock Rutherford Falls ended up in very different places than when the show’s debut season began would be an understatement.

Especially Ed Helms‘ Nathan Rutherford – the last of the titular town’s historic family to live there – when he discovered that he was in fact not a genuine Rutherford. The news has set Nathan on a path of self-discovery, where fans will follow suit in season two, which premieres June 16.

“He’s still very healthy and he’s not healed yet,” Helms said in an exclusive interview with E! News. “He’s still in a kind of purgatory and hasn’t faced some of the issues he’s afraid of.”

Luckily Nathan has his BFF Reagan Wells (Jan Smith) at his side to help him through it all. “That, I think, is the anchor that allows him to thrive in season two,” Helms added, “while still making a lot of stupid mistakes.”
