Renowned author Nicholas Evans has died aged 72, it has been reported. Evans is best known for his 1995 debut book The Horse Whisperer.

The novelist, screenwriter and journalist died August 9 of complications from a heart attack, according to a statement from his publicists at United Agents.

Evans, a native of Worcestershire, received his law degree from Oxford before beginning his career as a journalist with the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Evening Chronicle in the 1970s.

The author covered the war in Beirut while working as a broadcaster. He was very interested in world affairs, especially US politics.

Evans worked for London Weekend Television for the next ten years, producing documentaries for the South Bank Show about celebrities such as Sir Laurence Olivier, Francis Bacon and David Hockney.
