The BMX star has his sights set on freestyle gold at the multisport event in Munich
The 26-year-old Tokyo Olympic champion posted an impressive 82.30 GPA as Nikita Ducarroz and Lara Lessmann proved too hot with a thrilling performance in Munich.
Cycling is one of nine sports represented at these multisport championships as the city’s famous Olympic Park celebrates its 50th anniversaryth Anniversary since the Games were hosted in 1972.
Worthington thrived around the Japanese capital last summer and loves getting more of the same 12 months in the next 12 months.
The 2019 European champion, who will compete in the final on Friday, said: “I’m so excited to see it here – it’s almost like a mini Olympics.
“It’s super organized and the European Championship smashed it – we’re looked after really well and it’s so nice.
“It’s a really good position for tomorrow – I’ve got a few things I want to try and get out and practice and hopefully that can come to fruition.
“But I definitely can’t tell you what they are! We’ve had a hectic start to the year and much of the team has been traveling and competing for almost two or three months.
“We’ve had some good results and some not so good results – but that was a preparation for what is to come for the rest of the year. We were out of practice but now I’d like to think we’re back in practice.”
Worthington captured the hearts of the nation at last summer’s Olympics, performing a gravity-defying, dizzying 360-degree backflip to stun her rivals and grab a shock gold.
She is paving the way for the next generation of BMX riders and one of them is Sasha Pardoe, the 16-year-old West Midlands star whose stunning performance also secured her place in Friday’s showpiece.
Pardoe qualified sixth with an average score of 59.00, hot on the heels of more experienced rivals Lessman – a junior Olympic gold medalist – Laury Perez and Kim Lea Muller.
Worthington added: “Sasha is coming along and it was great to have her here.
“It’s nice to have someone else around and to have someone to talk to — she’s definitely coming out of her shell.”
