Federline referenced Spears’ use of social media and apologized to his sons.

He said, “I’m trying to explain to them, ‘Look, maybe that’s just another way she’s trying to express herself.’ But that doesn’t change the fact of what it does to them. It’s tough.’

“I can’t imagine what it’s like to have to go to high school as a teenager.”

He also defended the controversial conservatory, which saw Spears’ father Jamie Lynn controlling every aspect of her life for nearly 15 years, commenting that it “saved” her.

Federline said, “This whole thing has been harder to watch, harder to live through, harder to watch my boys go through than anything,” he says. “It was hard. It’s the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced in my life.”

He also commented on Spears’ father, Jamie Lynn, saying that he would “absolutely welcome Jamie Spears back into the boys’ lives” and that he felt “bad” for him.

In response to the “hurting” comments, Spears issued a statement on her Instagram account.

She said: “It saddens me to hear that my ex-husband has decided to discuss the relationship between me and my children… As we all know, raising teenagers is never easy for anyone.

“It concerns me that the reason is based on my Instagram… It was LONG before Instagram… I gave them my all… Just one word: HURTFUL.

“During my time as a conservator, I was controlled and monitored for almost 15 years. I should start doing more WAAAY than lying topless on the beach like a baby.

“Reminder that the trauma and insults that come with fame and this business doesn’t just affect me it affects my kids too!!!! … I’m only human and I’ve done my best.”

Spears’ husband Ashghari also issued a statement on Instagram regarding the comments Federline made about his new wife.

Ashghari said: “His statement regarding the distancing of the children has no validity and it is irresponsible to make that statement public.

“The boys are very smart and will soon be 18 to make their own decisions and may eventually realize that the ‘hard’ part was having a father who hasn’t worked much in over 15 years , as a role model…Kevin’s sauce is about to end, which likely explains the timing of those hurtful comments.

“I don’t know him personally and I have nothing against him, apart from the fact that he chose to defame my wife.

“His character is revealed through the approval of the cruel 13-year-old (conservatory) and his loyalty to Jaimie shows his approval even at the time of his conception.”

She said: “The control he had over someone as powerful as me – he loved the control of hurting his own daughter 100,000%. He loved it. I packed my bags and went to this place. I worked seven days a week, no days off, which is what California calls sex trafficking.

“Making someone work against their will, taking all of their possessions — credit card, cash, phone, passport — and putting them in a home where they work with the people who live with them.”
