A British teenager has died while on holiday at a hotel resort in Turkey.
The 14-year-old boy reportedly got into trouble while swimming in the hotel pool with his aunt during a stay at the five-star beachfront hotel Liberty Lara near Antalya on Sunday afternoon (14 August).
A hotel guest tells The sun that the boy was pulled unconscious from the pool by a barman and revived before being taken to the hospital.
According to the newspaper, the family was staying at the hotel for a wedding.
A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British boy who has died in Turkey and are in contact with local authorities.”
Located on the southern coast of Turkey, Liberty Lara Hotel features several swimming pools, including one with a water slide.
The hotel confirmed a young guest had died while swimming with his aunt in the resort’s main pool, adding that “lifeguards were on site within 30 seconds.”
autopsy to be performed
Police have viewed CCTV footage of the swimming pool and the hotel has announced that an autopsy will be carried out.
A spokesman for the resort told The Sun: “It is with a heavy heart that one of our young guests sadly passed away yesterday while swimming in our main pool with his aunt.
“At this moment our prayers and thoughts go out to the family and loved ones who are currently staying at our hotel.
“The sad, tragic loss of a young life is both devastating and harrowing for family, close relatives and loved ones.
“Out of respect for the family, we do not wish to comment on the incident pending the autopsy results.”
The spokesperson added: “Security cameras are located around the pool area and have been viewed by both Liberty Lara management and local police. Lifeguards were on site within 30 seconds.
“We have an extra lifeguard in excess of the required number to ensure the pools are not left unattended when a lifeguard is on a lunch break.”
