Atomic Kitten star Natasha Hamilton believes her mother’s skin cancer diagnosis was a “big wake-up call for us all”.
Natasha Hamilton has urged people to check their skin for new or changing moles to raise awareness about skin cancer.
Her mother Maria was recently diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a form of non-melanian skin cancer, after Natasha told her to go to the doctor to check a spot on her face.
The Atomic Kitten star, who was working as a skin specialist at the time, explained that she was giving her mum a facial when she noticed the unusual mark.
Natasha said her mother assumed the mark was caused by dry skin, but sometimes it would appear larger and very sore.
She revealed that it took her two doctor’s visits before her mother was finally referred to a determinatologist, who was able to diagnose it as basal cell carcinoma.
Natasha said: “She was recently given a cream that burns off pre-cancerous cells and she was then excised. Thankfully, my mom’s experience wasn’t melanoma — the deadliest form of skin cancer — and we were able to pull it out.
“But her experience was a huge wake-up call for all of us, as it forced us to examine our skin for marks and birthmarks, and to ensure anything new or out of the ordinary is examined as soon as possible.”
Natasha is now calling on people to join melanoma patient support and advocacy charity Melanoma UK in her National Mole Hunt.
